Classic vs. Contemporary Kitchens

The Classic Kitchen Design

The classic kitchen, sometimes referred to as 'the traditional kitchen,' has been around a long time, and following specific rules is what makes it timeless.

This style typically features lots of wood elements, has stone or ceramic floors, and normally looks its best using neutral tones as the main colour.

If you take a look at the Masterclass Wimbourne in the Inwell Blue here, you'll see that classic can still mean very modern.

Despite following the basic principles in their designs that have worked for decades, these traditional kitchens are continually evolving, particularly through the use of on-trend colours.

This year, this beautiful oak wine cabinet insert was introduced to our Masterclass range, and doesn't it look right at home in this kitchen?

Other staple attributes to a traditional kitchen include bags of character and attention to detail. There's a unique feel in the cabinet design of a traditional British kitchen that you really can't get anywhere else, something that our Masterclass kitchens capture perfectly.

Decoration of finer details such as patterned tiles and accessories adds the familiar traditional charm and personality – as shown by our Masterclass Malborough shaker kitchen in Coastal Mist, pictured here.

The Contemporary Kitchen Design

A true contemporary kitchen sits at the opposite end of the spectrum.

It's modern, sleek and linear in appearance but has all the latest technology to maximise its functionality.

Contemporary kitchens like the Nolte Nova Lack pictured above are created with storage and space in front of mind, and the result is a minimalist feel, where there's very little clutter. This means that the kitchen often relies heavily on its colours, patterns and materials to showcase its personality.

Unlike the classic kitchen, the modern kitchen has very few rules to follow, making it the perfect solution to many kitchen conundrums, from compact apartment kitchens to new generation large glass homes.

Of course, every kitchen is different, and so is every client. Not all kitchens sit at either end of the traditional/modern scale, and there are many ways to create a beautiful blend of both.

For example, a shaker kitchen offers a more simple, modern style whilst also following a traditional trend through its use of wood and classic framing.

One thing is certain, whether you're a classic or a contemporary kitchen fan, or somewhere in between, we will bring your kitchen ideas to life with our design expertise and range of beautiful Masterclass and Nolte kitchens.
